Generate Ideas Across Media for Your Portfolio
In this course you’ll work on concept creation for a variety of mediums. The focus here might be on design or advertising work - depending on the client needs as well as the needs of your portfolio. New techniques will be shared in order to push your brainstorming abilities further and help you understand what makes a great idea that can be rolled-out into a full campaign.
Each session you'll work on a different media (print, outdoor, guerrilla, and more) and roll out your concepts into 360° work.
This is an 8-week course that is taught both online and at our San Diego Studio. The Online course features a weekly web-conference.

Henry Hikima is a Founding Partner and the Creative Officer at Portfolio Studio. Henry started as an Art Director working in the Entertainment industry and has helped his students win awards for HOW, CMYK, Art Director's Club, One Show, YoungGuns, Archive, Clios, and the ADDYs including the National "Best in Show" (twice!).
He also spends his time as a creative recruiter where he finds and places creative talent in the advertising and design industries. Henry is always connected to what is current and needed in a portfolio.
Dr. Gina Greco is a Founding Partner and Director of Programs at Portfolio Studio. She began her career as an ad agency owner that served clients in high-tech, retail, real estate, healthcare and finance. Gina has provided thousands of hours of on-ground and online instruction to students in design, advertising, communications, and technology programs. Her students have won numerous awards and she has helped place grads in top-notch agencies and studios in the US and around the world.
What You'll Learn
It is recommended that you first complete either Concepting 1 or Concepting 2 (or both) prior to enrolling in this course. Alternatively, students may submit their portfolio for review and recommendation for this Concepting course.
Session 1: Ideas At The Center - All work we do focuses on a central idea. But, ideas are influenced by the media and the media may be the inspiration for an idea.
Session 2: Print - Print allows a concept to be communicated quickly. It’s the foundation for comprehensive campaigns in portfolios today. You'll begin to create work here. In this session your concepts can and should be communicated without words.
Session 3: OOH - (Out Of Home) - OOH allows creatives a great deal of flexibility. You can express powerful and innovative ideas for outdoor that elevate your campaigns.
Session 4: Ambient - Ambient Media Or Guerrilla Marketing. Unconventional and attention getting conceptual solutions reign in this area.
Session 5: Broadcast, Radio, And Video - Motion is becoming easier to express in portfolios but it is a great idea that stands out. Learn how.
Session 6: Interaction And Digital Media - Today, showcasing digital in your portfolio is a necessity. This session we jump into creative approaches for digital media and the benefit that interaction with a consumer provides.
Session 7: Social Media - Creating buzz electrifies social media. We learn how amazing ideas generate sharing and how to present those ideas in your work.
Session 8: Idea Ingenuity - Working With Emergent Media - Virtual reality, 3-D printing, GPS messaging and other new media are covered this awareness-raising session.
