In this course you’ll work on concept creation with company logos. The focus here is to create a “Logo” that communicates what the company is about. New techniques will be shared in order to push your brainstorming abilities and help you understand what makes a great logo that is simple, symbolic, eye catching, memorable and smart.

When you complete this course you should be able to:

  • Understand what a conceptual logo is
  • Come up with creative solutions to represent a company
  • Create a logo with minimal elements that is visually interesting and compelling
  • Understand the use of shapes, colors, and fonts for the logo

Henry Hikima

Henry Hikima is a Founding Partner and the Creative Officer at Portfolio Studio. Henry started as an Art Director working in the Entertainment industry and has helped his students win awards for HOW, CMYK, Art Director's Club, One Show, YoungGuns, Archive, Clios, and the ADDYs including the National "Best in Show" (twice!).

He also spends his time as a creative recruiter where he finds and places creative talent in the advertising and design industries. Henry is always connected to what is current and needed in a portfolio. 


What You'll Learn

When you complete this course you should be able to:

  • Understand what a Conceptual logo is
  • Come up with creative solutions to represent a company
  • Create a logo with minimal elements that is visual interesting and compelling
  • Understand the use of shapes, colors, and fonts for the logo

You will learn to:

  • Create a logo with a minimal amount of elements
  • Show how your logo works on business cards, store windows, shirts, etc.
  • See what is considered good work in the design industry today

 

Session 1: Course Introduction
In this session we look at: What is Branding? What is a logo and what does it represent? The importance of a good logo. Serif and Sans Serif fonts. We discuss Style guides (Color/Typography/Elements/Tone/etc.) and Grids. And, we have an exercise.

Session 2: Types Of Logos
Here we will learn: The principles of effective logo design, how to work with uppercase and lowercase fonts, types of logos. We'll also discuss how to get started with ideas- (Grids), sketches/roughs, and embark on an exercise working with positive/negative space.

Session 3: Icons And Symbols
This session we'll work with icons/symbols to communicate what a company does, learn about successful and unsuccessful logos.

Session 4: Personal Logos
This session you'll create your own logo that can be used on digital and print materials.

Session 5: Logos In Media
A showcase of how logos can be used as well as progress on the development of your work will be covered this session.

Session 6: Sketches To Final Execution
We move forward on logos and continue to explore media including expanding to campaigns: Ads, posters, packaging, digital, etc.

Session 7: Expanded Logo Campaigns
Here we begin to wrap up our campaigns and discuss final presentations.

Session 8: Final Presentations
We showcase our work this session.
